Summary
In WWII, Navajo tribal member Samuel Holiday was a 'Navajo code talker' who used his native language for secret battlefield communications. Based on interviews with Holiday by historian McPherson, this work tells Holiday's life story in his own words, from his childhood in rural Utah, his Indian boarding school experiences, and into the US Pacific campaign in WWII. McPherson gives background on Navajo culture and war history. Of special interest are Holliday's descriptions of how Navajo code talkers actively relied on their cultural and spiritual beliefs during their work for the war. The book includes b&w historical photos. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
