Summary
Editors Numbers and Kampourakis offer a history-of-science corrigendum addressing 27 popular myths about science, arranged in four chronologically advancing sections from the medieval and early modern era to the nineteenth century, twentieth century, and overall generalizations. Each myth is discussed in scholarly detail, including the basis of the myth, motivations behind its persistence, and then a deconstruction of why it is a myth, ranging from firm recontexualization to outright debunkment. Topics include the alleged dearth of science in the Dark Ages, the degree to which figures such as Columbus, Newton, Copernicus, Wöhler, Darwin, Pasteur, Mendel, and Pauling were pivotal and revolutionary in their fields, the distinction between science and religion or pseudoscience, simple characterizations of collaboration and conflict between important figures, and the centrality of a single ?scientific method.?
